Traveling in Europe offers an experience like nowhere else on this planet. I have lived in Europe for the past 6 years and have traveled extensively around the continent. In this time I have experienced so much diversity and beauty, but no matter how long I have spent traveling Europe there is always more to see and do.

However, through my travels, I have visited some pretty amazing places that would be a shame not to share. During my travels, I have often found that the less touristy / less well-known places are the most enjoyable. This list is complete with the best places to visit in Europe in 2024 that break the norms of “Paris” “Rome” and “Santorini” and will show you a new and untouched side of Europe.

Prepare to fall in love with different cultures, histories, people, and architecture that are all closely located within a short drive or flight from one another. Add these below destinations to your 2024 Europe bucket list today!

Matera is a truly stunning city in southern Italy and one of the most amazing and jaw-dropping places I have ever visited in Europe. It is easily one of the best places to visit in Europe in 2024 and a bucket list place for history and architecture lovers.

Renowned for its unique ancient cave houses, known as “Sassi,” Matera is a UNESCO World Heritage site that offers a journey through history. The Sassi, carved into the stone that makes up the city, creates a maze of homes, churches, and winding streets.

Here you can explore the city’s historic center and delve into the rich cultural heritage preserved within Matera’s museums and churches. Whether walking through its ancient streets or admiring the panoramic views, Matera promises an unforgettable European travel experience in 2024.

Corsica, France

Corsica is an island off the coast of France known for its rugged landscapes, beautiful beaches, and rich cultural heritage. As a part of France, Corsica offers a unique blend of French and Italian influences, creating a unique atmosphere that sets it apart from mainland France.

Here you can explore charming villages located in the hills, where narrow streets wind through colorful buildings and markets. The below photos are of the town of Bonifacio – my favorite village in Corsica.

Beyond the towns, Corsica’s coastline is a paradise for beach lovers, with both sandy beaches and dramatic cliffs. While, outdoor lovers can enjoy activities such as hiking the GR20, one of Europe’s most famous long-distance trails. Or exploring the Scandola Nature Reserve a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its diverse marine and terrestrial ecosystems.

Kotor, Montenegro

Kotor is a stunning town located within the Bay of Kotor along Montenegro’s Adriatic coast. Located in my TOP COUNTRY TO VISIT in 2024 – MONTENEGRO!

This picturesque town is renowned for its medieval charm and stunning natural beauty. Surrounded by huge mountains and full of well-preserved architecture, Kotor is a UNESCO World Heritage site that welcomes you with its rich history and captivating ambiance.

The town’s main attraction is its Old Town, a maze of narrow cobblestone streets and squares, home to landmarks like the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon and the Saint Luke Church.

Alberobello, located in the Puglia region of southern Italy, is easily one of the most unique and famous towns in Italy known for its distinctive trulli houses. These traditional dry stone huts with conical roofs create a fairytale-like atmosphere that sets Alberobello apart as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Wandering through the narrow streets you will encounter a surreal landscape of Trulli, many of which have been converted into shops, cafes, and accommodations.

São Miguel, Azores

São Miguel, the largest island in the Azores archipelago, is a lush and beautiful destination in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Known as “The Green Island,” São Miguel is known for its stunning landscapes, volcanic craters, hot springs, and vibrant coastal scenery.

The island’s capital, Ponta Delgada, is a blend of historical architecture and modern amenities. In the town, you can stroll through cobblestone streets, explore local markets, and admire iconic landmarks.

But one of the biggest draws to São Miguel is its nature! A highlight is the Sete Cidades, a twin-lake crater surrounded by rolling hills and lush greenery. The island’s volcanic origins can be seen in attractions like the Furnas Valley, where geothermal activity creates bubbling hot springs and boiling mud pools.

São Miguel offers outdoor enthusiasts a paradise for hiking, with trails leading to stunning viewpoints, waterfalls, and calm lakes. The island’s diverse ecosystems include everything!

Tromsø, Norway

Tromsø, located in the Arctic Circle, is a vibrant city in northern Norway known as one of the best winter holiday destinations in the world.

One of the top reasons people visit Tromsø is to see the Northern Lights. You can join guided tours or venture into the surrounding countryside for the best viewing opportunities. If you visit Tromsø in the summer you can also witness the Midnight Sun, which offers an extraordinary natural spectacle.

For those seeking outdoor adventures, Tromsø provides opportunities for dog sledding, whale watching, and exploring the stunning fjords. It is also a great place for some of Europe’s most beautiful hikes! Great in both summer and winter – but I’d suggest visiting in winter – Tromsø is one of the best places to visit in Europe in 2024.

Sarajevo, Bosnia and Hercegnovia

Sarajevo, a city where the East meets the West, is a symbol of cultural coexistence and resilience. Its unique blend of Muslim and Orthodox Christianity is evident in its architecture, cuisine, and daily life.

Mosques and Orthodox churches coexist in harmony, reflecting the city’s diversity of cultures. This blend creates a unique atmosphere similar to cities like Istanbul or Marrakech, yet distinctly European. Walking through Sarajevo’s streets you will hear the call to prayer mixed with church bells, a rare and unique experience in Europe.

Sarajevo’s history is marked by the tragic events of the Bosnian War, with sites like the Sarajevo War Tunnel serving as poignant reminders. Despite its turbulent past, Sarajevo is rapidly transforming. It’s emerging as an up-and-coming destination, rich in history and lessons of peace and tolerance.

Apart from its cultural and historical allure, Sarajevo is also attractive for its affordability. The cost of visiting is relatively low compared to other European destinations, making it an ideal spot for budget-conscious travelers.

Polignano a Mare, Italy

Polignano a Mare is one of my favorite coastal destinations in Europe known for its breathtaking beauty and historic charm. It is quaint and authentic and there are so many amazing things to do in Polignano a Mare.

A highlight of Polignano a Mare is Cala Monachile Beach. This is easily one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe with stunning crystal-clear waters and the iconic sea stacks along the shoreline. This coastal gem seamlessly blends natural wonders with cultural allure, making it a must-experience destination in 2024.

💡 I visited Polignano a Mare in October and was lucky to have very warm weather. This was perfect for enjoying the town and the rest of the region of Puglia with fewer crowds.


Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland

Lauterbrunnen is a valley village in Switzerland that is just about as beautiful as it gets. It is easily my favorite place in Switzerland that had my jaw on the floor the first time I visited. Since then I have visited 3 more times and I still feel the same awe and wonder.

The little village is surrounded by high cliffs with 72 waterfalls spilling over them into the valley. The green-filled valley dotted with traditional Swiss chalets and plenty of cows, creates a postcard-perfect setting.

Lauterbrunnen is a top place for adventure and outdoor travelers. With hiking trails offering opportunities to explore the surrounding landscapes, including the famous Lauterbrunnen Valley trail. Here you can also enjoy activities like paragliding and base jumping, attracting thrill-seekers from around the world.

The valley is a gateway to some of Switzerland’s most breathtaking destinations. From Lauterbrunnen, you can visit other villages like Grindelwald and Interlaken. Or go on some of the best hikes in Europe to Jungfrau, Schilthorn, and more!

💡 INSIDER TIP: This year I spent some time in Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald and it is spectacular! I highly suggest exploring Lauterbrunnen and then heading to Grindelwald to do the adventure of Europe!


Mont Saint-Michel, France

Mont Saint-Michel, situated on the rugged coastline of Normandy, France, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the world’s most iconic landmarks. Rising from the sea, this medieval town is perched atop a rocky island.

Mont Saint-Michel is a masterpiece of medieval architecture and a testament to the skill of its builders. During low tide, you can walk across the causeway to the island, while at high tide, it becomes an island, accessible only by the raised bridge.

Winding cobblestone streets lead to charming shops, restaurants, and houses within the walls. Visiting Mont Saint-Michel truly feels like traveling back in time in the most amazing way possible!

Mont Saint-Michel is not just a historic site; it’s also an amazing showing of nature. The surrounding bay experiences some of the highest tides in Europe, transforming the landscape with each tidal cycle.


Lake Bled, Slovenia

Lake Bled is a picturesque gem that will captivate you with its stunning beauty and serene atmosphere. The focal point of this paradise is the island in the middle of the lake, where you will find the iconic Bled Castle and the Church of the Assumption.

The lake has crystal-clear waters that reflect the surrounding mountains and the medieval castle. You can go on a traditional wooden boat to reach the island or simply walk along the lakeside promenade, taking in the stunning views.

The beauty of Lake Bled extends beyond its shores, with numerous hiking trails leading to viewpoints like Ojstrica and Osojnica, providing breathtaking panoramas of the lake and the Karavanke Alps.


Setenil de las Bodegas, Spain

Exploring Setenil de las Bodegas provides a one-of-a-kind experience, where the integration of architecture with the natural environment creates a unique atmosphere. This is one of the best places to visit in Europe in 2024 that is different, unique, and not your average holiday choice.

The most amazing thing about Setenil is its houses that are built directly into the cliffs and cave-like structures, providing natural shelter and a striking aesthetic. Strolling through its narrow streets, you can admire the combination of whitewashed buildings and huge rocky additions unlike anywhere else in Europe!

The village’s historic center is a maze of winding alleys and traditional Spanish houses complete with vibrant flowers. The medieval castle and the Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation are notable landmarks, offering a glimpse into Setenil’s rich past.


Meteora, Greece

Meteora’s spiritual ambiance, combined with its geological marvel, makes it one of the top places to visit in 2024. This monastery blends cultural, historical, and natural wonders, making it a must-visit for those seeking a unique experience in Greece.

Meteora is a UNESCO World Heritage site – I mean look at it – that is made up of a complex of monasteries perched atop rock pillars. The name “Meteora” translates to “suspended in the air,” capturing the otherworldly nature of this geological phenomenon.

The monasteries, originally built in the 14th century, are constructed on sandstone peaks, creating a surreal landscape.

Today, six monasteries remain, including the Great Meteoron, Varlaam, and Holy Trinity, each with its unique history and architectural beauty. Accessible by staircases carved into the rock you can explore the well-preserved interiors adorned with frescoes, religious artifacts, and panoramic views of the surrounding valleys.


Milos, Greece

Milos is a hidden gem known for its diverse landscapes, crystal-clear waters, and local charm. With its unique, stunning beaches and charming villages, Milos offers the ultimate Greek island experience. The island’s coastline is complete with white cliffs, hidden coves, and vibrant blue waters.

The highlight of Milos for me is the beaches, most notably Sarakiniko. This is one of the most amazing beaches I have ever visited that feels like you on actually on the moon. With its wavy white rocks stretching endlessly in both directions, this beach alone is a reason to visit Milos.

Milos is also steeped in history. The ancient theater of Milos offers panoramic views of the Aegean. While The Catacombs of Milos showcases the island’s historical significance.

Charming villages such as Plaka, with its narrow alleys and traditional Cycladic architecture, and Pollonia, a picturesque fishing village, offer a glimpse into Milos’ local life. The island’s cuisine, featuring fresh seafood and regional specialties, adds to the overall Mediterranean experience.

Dolomites, Italy

The Dolomites are one of the most beautiful places to visit in Italy and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This amazing mountain range in Northern Italy is renowned for its dramatic peaks, alpine meadows, and charming villages.

The Dolomites attract hikers and climbers from around the world. Scenic passes and high-altitude trails provide breathtaking views of jagged peaks, alpine lakes, and lush valleys, creating the perfect backdrop for exploration.

Located on the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland, Rovaniemi is a magical destination known for its enchanting winter landscapes, the official hometown of Santa Claus, and a gateway to the Arctic.

The city is a winter wonderland with snow-covered landscapes, providing a perfect setting for outdoor activities. Sardinia is an island in the Mediterranean Sea that offers beautiful beaches, rugged landscapes, and a rich cultural heritage. It is definitely a more “off-the-beaten-track” place to visit in Italy which makes it all the more exciting to visit and explore!

The coastline of Sardinia is complete with some of the world’s most beautiful beaches – so blue and clear you might think they are someplace like the Maldives! While Inland, Sardinia has a rugged interior marked by granite peaks, lush forests, and charming towns.

Sardina is a diverse destination that offers a blend of turquoise waters, ancient history, and traditional Italian charm.


Bodrum, Turkey

Bodrum, a jewel on the Aegean coast of Turkey, is a captivating blend of ancient history, vibrant nightlife, and stunning coastal beauty. Renowned for its blue waters, white-washed architecture, and lively atmosphere, Bodrum has been a favorite destination for history enthusiasts and sun-seekers.

This vibrant, colorful town is one of my favorite places in the South of France! It is just as beautiful in real life as it looks in photos and is the perfect base for visiting other cities and towns along the coast.

Eze, France

Eze is one of the most up-and-coming villages that more and more people are visiting. It combines the perfect blend of history, nature, and elegance. Perched high in the mountains on the French Riviera, this village is enchanted with medieval allure and breathtaking views.

Visiting Eze welcomes a plethora of things to do and see to make your time as perfect as possible. Just note that this is a 4-5 hour visit place where you don’t need to budget too much time or even stay there is experience it fully.

This is one of the top places to visit in Europe in 2024 that captures the essence of the Côte d’Azur’s timeless charm.

💡 Due to Eze’s popularity online it is getting increasingly busy! Therefore, I suggest visiting in the off-season (April, May, or September – October) to avoid the huge crowds.
