Does it Snow in Amsterdam?
Yes, It does snow in Amsterdam! It is pretty rate but there is typically AT LEAST one day during the winter season where snow does fall. The winter season in Amsterdam spans from December to February.
However, the amount of snowfall can vary from year to year, and it’s not guaranteed that there will be significant snow every winter.
I have seen it snow a few times in Amsterdam and when it does it is pretty random and the snow doesn’t last long. The coldest I’ve seen in Amsterdam was February 2021 when it snowed twice and the canals froze over! People were skating on the canals until around 1 PM, when it started to go above 0 degrees and they were melting along with the snow.
If you are lucky enough to be in Amsterdam when the temperatures drop below 0 and it snows the city takes on a charming and picturesque quality. But, it is pretty hard to plan far in advance when to visit Amsterdam if you want to see snow since it is pretty random and can happen any month or day regardless of historical data.
Weather During Winter in Amsterdam
During the winter months, Amsterdam experiences a chilly and occasionally frosty climate. The city’s weather from December to February is characterized by the following:
❄️ Temperature: Average daytime temperatures range from 2°C to 6°C (36°F to 43°F), but it can get colder, especially at night. Sub-zero temperatures are not uncommon.
❄️ Precipitation: Amsterdam’s winters are relatively wet, with frequent rainfall. Snowfall is not that common, but it can occur, typically in January and February.
❄️ Daylight: Days are shorter during winter, with fewer daylight hours. The sun sets early, around 4:30 to 5:30 pm.
❄️ Winds: Amsterdam can be quite windy during the winter, which can make it feel colder than the actual temperature.
Travelers visiting Amsterdam in winter should come prepared with warm clothing, including a good coat, scarf, and gloves. Here are the average temperatures for each of the winter months in Amsterdam:
⭐️ November: The average temperature in November ranges from around 6°C (43°F) during the day to 2°C (36°F) at night.
⭐️ December: In December, the average daytime temperature is around 5°C (41°F), and it can drop to 0°C (32°F) or below at night. Snowfall is more likely in this month.
⭐️ January: January is one of the coldest months, with average daytime temperatures hovering around 4°C (39°F) and nighttime temperatures often dropping below freezing.
⭐️ February: February remains chilly, with average daytime temperatures of about 6°C (43°F) and similar nighttime temperatures as January.
Keep in mind that these are average temperatures and can vary from year to year. I have experienced snow and freezing canals in December, January and February so despite the average temperatures it can happen.
Average Snowfall in Amsterdam
Amsterdam typically experiences light to moderate snowfall during the winter months. Here are the average snowfall numbers for each of the winter months:
- November: Amsterdam doesn’t typically see significant snowfall in November. If it does snow, it’s usually light and doesn’t accumulate much.
- December: December is when Amsterdam begins to see more frequent snowfall. On average, the city can receive about 1-2 days of snow during the month.
- January: January can bring more consistent snowfall. On average, there are about 1-2 days of snow during the month.
- February: Snowfall in February is similar to January, with an average of 1-2 snowy days.
Its worth noting that significant snowfall in Amsterdam has become relatively rare. The city’s climate, influenced by its proximity to the North Sea, tends to be milder compared to other European destinations. While the historical there has been snow in winter it’s becoming increasingly common for winters to pass without any snow.
Amsterdam’s winters are now characterized more by chilly temperatures and LOTS of rain rather than heavy snowfall. I find the rain makes Amsterdam feel a lot colder than the temperature says. It is very damp and almost bone-chilling, but with the right gear and cafe hopping you can stay warm and cosy.
When snow does occur, it’s often in the form of light flurries or a brief dusting that doesn’t accumulate significantly. This change in weather patterns aligns with the broader trend of milder winters and shifting climate conditions in many parts of the world.
While Amsterdam’s winter wonderland scenes remain cherished, it’s important to be prepared for the possibility that snowfall may be minimal or even absent during your visit in the last few years. Nonetheless, the city’s festive atmosphere and charm make it a delightful destination to explore during the winter months, even without the traditional blanket of snow.

When did it last snow in Amsterdam?
The most recent snowfall in Amsterdam occurred in February 2023. Snow is a rather random event in the city, usually happening once or twice during the winter season. The canals freezing even rare with this happening once a year, maybe even only once every two years.
For the canals to fully freeze so you can skate on them it needs to be pretty cold and Amsterdam doesn’t often get this cold. When I’ve seen the canals freeze it has only been thick enough to skate on for the morning and once the sun is out the ice starts to melt too much and becomes dangerous.
When snow does grace Amsterdam with its presence, it has a magical way of drawing the entire community outdoors to revel in its beauty and charm. The same is true for when the canals freeze.
