I recently visited Tulum and was incredibly nervous about visiting. I had heard so many mixed things but knew I had to see it for myself to make my own opinions and guess what? I LOVED IT. I spent a week touring Tulum and its surroundings and am happy to share my favorites with you!
Tulum is one of Mexico’s most popular travel destinations famous for its beautiful beaches, ancient Mayan ruins, and bohemian atmosphere. While touristy, its charm lies in eco-conscious resorts, trendy beach clubs, and a luxurious vibe, offering the perfect blend of natural beauty and modern comforts.

However, to delve deeper into the local culture, enjoy more time relaxing on the beach, and explore surrounding attractions like cenotes and biosphere reserves, a longer stay is best.
I’d suggest spending at least 3 days in Tulum to allow for time to see and do as much as possible.
Is Tulum a day trip from Cancun?
Yes, Tulum is often visited as a day trip from Cancun. The distance between Cancun and Tulum is approximately 130 kilometers (81 miles), and the journey takes around 1.5 to 2 hours by car.
You also opt for guided tours or local buses (ADO BUS)to get to Tulum.
Is Tulum a walkable city?
Tulum is a relatively small town, and certain areas are walkable, particularly the main avenue in the town where you’ll find shops, restaurants, and services.
However, the beach area is more spread out, and depending on your specific destination or accommodation, walking is not super practical for longer distances. I was surprised at how far the distances in the beach zone are and walking in the heat is not a great option.
Is Tulum or Cancun more fun?
If you’re seeking a vibrant nightlife with clubs and resort parties, Cancun is for you. Cancun is known for its lively atmosphere, numerous clubs, and always busy hotel zone that is perfect to those looking for an energetic and party-centric experience.
While Tulum also has a fun nightlife and party scene it is more luxerious and often times more expensive. Tulum often hosts famous DJ’s and world-renowned festivals that are becoming more and more common.
Both Tulum and Cancun are fun but in general:

Below are some general Tulum travel tips to take into account.
➡️ Sun Protection: Tulum can be hot, so bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun.
➡️ Cash is King: While credit cards are widely accepted, having some cash is useful for smaller places, and avoiding credit card machine surcharges.
➡️ ATMS: Use ATMs located inside banks or reputable establishments. DO NOT use any ATM’s in the hotel zone!
➡️ Reservations for Popular Spots: Tulum is a popular destination, and some restaurants and beach clubs can get crowded.
