What is the Bali Rice Field (Tegalalang Rice Terrace)
The Bali rice field is a unique area of land that is known for its breathtakingly green rice paddies that stretch into the distance. The paddies are laid out in multiple terraces, resulting in various rows of rice fields along the hilly terrain. They are made following a traditional Balinese irrigation system called Subak.
The bright colours and unique layout make this one of Bali’s most famous and visited places. Plus, the emerald green fields are a UNESCO World Heritage Site! The fairytale-like Tegalalang Rice Terrace is something pretty specific to Bali, which only adds to the urgency to visit them here.
How to get to the Bali Rice Field (Tegalalang Rice Terrace)
The Bali rice field is reachable in around 30 minutes from Ubud’s center. You can get here by renting a scooter and driving yourself, or by taking a taxi.
A scooter costs 80,000 IDR for a whole day. While the cost of a taxi or private driver will vary. It is common to hire a private driver for day trips who will drive you to your destination, wait for you, and drive you back. This will cost around 200,000 IDR. However, you can also hire a scooter to bring you there with GoJek and prices will be much lower! If you take a local taxi be sure to agree on a price before getting in the car.
The road to the rice field is pretty windy and busy so if you are an uncomfortable scooter driver it may be best to get driven there.
Bali Rice Field (Tegalalang Rice Terrace) Entrance Fee
Technically there is no entrance fee to the rice terraces. There are locals who ask for donations and giving around 10,000 IDR is commonplace. They are usually asking for money donations when you want to walk on their terraces and take photos.
Be sure to bring Indonesiasion Rupees in cash in order to pay for the donation.

Bali Rice Field Opening Hours
The official opening hours for the rice terraces are from 7 AM – 6 PM. However, getting over the fence before 7 AM is very easy. As mentioned, early in the morning is the best time to visit the rice terraces, so aiming for 7 AM or earlier is best. Bali is extremely humid and visiting at midday is almost too hot.
Best time to visit the Bali Rice Field
There is no bad time to visit the Bali rice field.
However, different months and times of the year offer different pros and cons of visiting.
The rainy season in Bali is from December to March and visiting during this time could result in spending time in the rain. However, the rain comes and goes and these months welcome fewer tourists.
The rice terraces are most green during the months of March, April, September, or October because this is when they are being harvested. While the months between September and October the fields are slightly more yellow-tinted.
The best time of day to visit is in the morning when few people are there and the sunrise streams through the trees in a magical way.
