You’ll find over 100 rock-cut tombs carved into massive sandstone cliffs, each with its own unique designs and inscriptions. The most famous tomb is the Qasr al-Farid, often called the “Lonely Castle,” which stands alone and looks like something straight out of an Indiana Jones movie.
While wandering through Hegra, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The site is relatively quiet compared to other archaeological destinations, giving you the chance to explore without huge crowds.

The viewpoint overlooks the Harrat Uwayrid volcanic mountains and the rolling dunes, giving you a front-row seat to one of the most stunning natural landscapes in Saudi Arabia. As the sun dips behind the mountains, the sky lights up in shades of orange, pink, and purple, creating the perfect backdrop for unforgettable photos.
INSIDER TIP: Arrive about 30 minutes before sunset to grab a good spot and watch the sky change as the sun sets. It can get chilly in the evening, so it’s a good idea to bring a light jacket.

Ashar Valley is one of AlUla’s most picturesque spots, with dramatic sandstone cliffs create a stunning contrast that’s perfect for a peaceful escape. Explore Dadan and Jabal Ikmah

The oasis is free to visit and is open daily from 9:00 AM to midnight, giving you plenty of time to explore at your own pace. Along the way, you’ll find small shops, traditional restaurants, and even a few art installations that add a modern touch to this historic spot.
INSIDER TIP: Visit in the late afternoon for the best light and cooler temperatures. Don’t forget to stop by one of the local cafes to enjoy fresh dates and a cup of Arabic coffee—it’s a quintessential AlUla experience!

One of the best ways to learn about Saudi food is by taking a coffee-making class, where you can try your hand at brewing Gahwa, traditional Arabic coffee. It’s made with lightly roasted coffee beans, cardamom, and sometimes saffron—a truly unique flavor.
💡 I really love how the coffee is always served with a few dates, which complement the warmth of the drink perfectly.
Another must-try is Tamees, a soft, flatbread often served alongside meals. It’s a local favorite, and I can’t get enough of it! The texture is light and fluffy, and it pairs well with hummus, stews, or even just a dab of olive oil.
Enjoy a Stay at a Luxury Hotel
Staying at a luxury hotel is one of the best things to do in AlUla for an unforgettable experience. Both Banyan Tree AlUla and Habitas AlUla offer something special for those looking for comfort and a touch of luxury in this stunning desert landscape.

The resort has spacious villas with private pools (only some have private pools) and a world-class spa. Its remote location provides a sense of exclusivity, and the surroundings are absolutely breathtaking.

Best Time to Visit AlUla
The best time to visit AlUla is during the winter months (October to March).
The weather is cooler and more comfortable for exploring the desert, with daytime temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C. Summer can be unbearably hot, so planning your trip during these months ensures a more pleasant experience.
How To Get Go and How to Get Around AlUla
To get to AlUla, you can fly directly into AlUla International Airport (ULH), with flights from major cities in Saudi Arabia. Alternatively, you can fly into Medina and take a 3-hour drive to AlUla.
Once in AlUla, taxis, rental cars, and organized tours are the best ways to get around. Keep in mind that public transportation is limited, so renting a car or joining a tour is often the most convenient option.
