5 Days in Marrakech, Morocco

Short on time? Here’s everything you need to know!
Where to Stay in Marrakech
➡️ Monriad
➡️ Riad Palais Calipau
➡️ Riad NayaNour
➡️ Les Jardins De La Médina

Day 1: Arrival and Exploration of the Medina

Morning

Arrival in Marrakech: Once you arrive, check into your charming riad or hotel. I really love staying in traditional riads for an authentic experience.

These beautiful, historic homes have been converted into cozy guesthouses, offering a perfect blend of Moroccan architecture and modern comforts.

Some of my favorite riads
➡️ Monriad
➡️ Riad Le Petit Joyau
➡️ Riad Palais Calipau
➡️ Riad NayaNour
➡️ Les Jardins De La Médina

Walk around the medina: Take a walk around your accommodation to get a feel for the local area. The narrow, winding streets are full of surprises and give you a great introduction to Marrakech’s vibrant culture.

You’ll find colorful souks (markets) selling everything from spices and textiles to ceramics and jewelry. Don’t be afraid to get a little lost—it’s part of the adventure!

INSIDER TIP: Download an offline map to navigate the medina’s maze-like alleys. It’s easy to get lost, but that’s part of the fun! I recommend the Maps.me app, which works great without an internet connection.

Afternoon

Jemaa el-Fnaa Square: Head to the heart of Marrakech and immerse yourself in the bustling energy of Jemaa el-Fnaa. This iconic square is a sensory overload in the best possible way.

From snake charmers and henna tattoo artists to storytellers and street performers, there’s always something fascinating to watch. Wander through the rows of stalls and let the sights, sounds, and smells transport you to another world.

Lunch / Early Dinner: Enjoy a meal at a rooftop restaurant overlooking Jemaa el-Fnaa. The views are incredible, especially as the sun sets and the square comes alive with evening activities.

Rooftop terraces like Café de France offer great views and delicious food. Savor traditional Moroccan dishes like couscous, pastilla, and Moroccan salads while watching the hustle and bustle below.

INSIDER TIP: Make a reservation in advance to secure the best seats with a view. And don’t forget to try a glass of mint tea, a Moroccan staple that’s both refreshing and aromatic.

Exploration after dinner: After dinner, take another stroll through the medina. The night market is a different experience, with lantern-lit stalls and a slightly more relaxed atmosphere. It’s the perfect time to shop for souvenirs and try food from local stalls if you are still hungry!

Day 2: Historical and Cultural Highlights

Morning

Bahia Palace: Start your day by exploring the stunning Bahia Palace, a 19th-century marvel that showcases the best of Moroccan architecture. The palace, built by Si Moussa, a grand vizier of the sultan, is a splendid example of Moroccan craftsmanship.

Wander through the intricately decorated rooms and lush gardens, and admire the beautiful tilework, stucco, and wood carvings. Each courtyard and room tells a story of luxury and grandeur, reflecting the opulent lifestyle of the elite during that period.

INSIDER TIP: Arrive early to avoid the crowds and take your time exploring the palace. The soft morning light also makes for better photos.

Saadian Tombs: Next, head to the nearby Saadian Tombs, the final resting place of the Saadian dynasty’s sultans, their families, and their closest advisors. These tombs were rediscovered in 1917, having been sealed off for centuries, and are renowned for their exquisite decoration.

The mausoleum is adorned with intricate carvings, colorful tiles, and beautiful marble pillars, making it a must-see for anyone interested in Moroccan history and architecture.

INSIDER TIP: Look out for the tomb of Sultan Ahmed el Mansour, which is the most elaborately decorated and a true highlight of the site.

Afternoon

Enjoy a meal at a traditional Moroccan restaurant. Here are three of the best options:

  1. Dar Yacout: A classic choice for an upscale Moroccan dining experience, known for its exquisite decor and delicious tagines.
  2. Al Fassia: Famous for its all-female staff and mouth-watering Moroccan dishes, particularly the lamb shoulder and pigeon pastilla.
  3. Le Jardin: Located in a lush garden, this restaurant offers a relaxing ambiance and a mix of traditional and modern Moroccan cuisine.

El Badi Palace: After lunch, visit the ruins of El Badi Palace, which was once a grand and opulent palace. Although now mostly in ruins, the sheer size of the palace and the remnants of its former glory are impressive. Walk through the massive courtyard, explore the underground tunnels, and climb up to the terraces for a great view of the surrounding area.

Majorelle Garden: Conclude your afternoon with a visit to the serene Majorelle Garden. This beautifully landscaped garden, famously restored by Yves Saint Laurent, offers a peaceful retreat from the bustling city.

Stroll through the vibrant blue pathways, surrounded by exotic plants and water features. Be sure to visit the Berber Museum on-site, which showcases the rich cultural heritage of Morocco’s Berber people.

INSIDER TIP: The garden is particularly popular, so consider visiting later in the afternoon when it’s less crowded.

Day 3: Day Trip to the Agafy Desert

Morning

Start your day early with a scenic drive from Marrakech to the Agafay Desert, which takes about an hour. The rocky desert landscape is a stark contrast to the bustling city, offering peace and stunning views.

Begin your desert adventure with a camel ride. It’s a fantastic way to experience the desert and take in the serene surroundings. I really love the gentle sway of the camels and the expansive views.

INSIDER TIP: Wear comfortable clothing and bring a hat and sunscreen. The desert sun can be intense, even in the morning.

4×4 Adventure or Quad Biking: For those seeking a bit of excitement, hop on a 4×4 vehicle or quad bike for a thrilling ride through the desert. The rugged terrain and wide-open spaces make for an exhilarating experience.

Enjoy a traditional Moroccan lunch in a desert camp. Many tours offer meals that include delicious local dishes like tagine, couscous, and freshly baked bread, served under a tent or in a shaded area.

Evening

Head back to Marrakech in the late afternoon, arriving in time to freshen up and enjoy another wonderful evening in the city. Choose another fantastic restaurant for dinner. You might want to revisit one of the options from the previous evening or try somewhere new.

Day 4: Markets and Souks

Morning

Ben Youssef Madrasa: Start your day with a visit to this former Islamic school, renowned for its stunning architecture and intricate tilework. It’s a peaceful spot to admire the craftsmanship and get a glimpse of historical Marrakech.

Then enjoy a traditional Moroccan meal at a café within the souks. Here are three great options:

➡️ Cafe Des Épices
➡️ Nomad Marrakech
➡️ Le Jardin Marrakech

Afternoon

Explore the Souks: Spend the afternoon wandering through the maze-like souks of Marrakech. From spices to textiles, jewelry to pottery, there’s a treasure trove of items to discover. Bargain with local vendors and soak in the vibrant atmosphere.
